As part of a pilot programme exploring how Community Managed Libraries can engage more effectively with Members of Parliament, Fleckney Community Library recently welcomed South Leicestershire MP Alberto Costa.
The visit proved to be a shining example of how MPs are eager to support the successes of their constituents, and how libraries can use these connections to strengthen their role at the heart of local communities.
A warm welcome in Fleckney
Mr Costa visited Fleckney Community Library to meet trustees, staff, and volunteers, and to see first-hand the library’s work as a thriving hub for literacy, digital inclusion, and community life.
Linda Marshall, Chair of the Friends of Fleckney Library, spoke proudly of the library’s achievements: “Reading for pleasure changes lives and a library is a vital asset, providing a warm, friendly welcome and a safe place for the local community to enjoy. We are proud to share how our volunteers are making that happen here in Fleckney and delighted to be able to show Alberto Costa MP the difference we’re making every day.”
Recognition from Westminster
Mr Costa’s enthusiasm and genuine interest in the library’s work gave a real boost to everyone involved and he praised the library as a powerful example of grassroots commitment to community wellbeing saying:
“Fleckney Community Library is a shining example of what can be achieved when local people come together to support and improve their community. From providing a welcoming place for local residents to encouraging children to read and write, to providing vital digital access for residents, the volunteers here are making a real difference. I was delighted to visit and to support their efforts to keep this wonderful service thriving for years to come.”
Importantly, Mr Costa went beyond words of support, offering to host an afternoon tea in Parliament for Fleckney’s volunteers and trustees. This generous gesture sparked wider conversations about how community libraries across Leicestershire could mark their 10th anniversaries in 2026 with a county-wide celebration in Westminster.
A model for engaging MPs
This visit forms part of a pilot initiative within the Community Managed Libraries Network to explore ways of involving MPs in local library life. The outcome in Fleckney demonstrates that MPs are not only willing to engage but genuinely value the chance to celebrate community achievements.
For other community libraries looking to build stronger links with their MPs, our key recommendations are:
- Put MPs on your mailing list – make sure they hear about your events, achievements, and challenges.
- Invite them to visit – seeing the library in action is the most powerful way to convey its impact.
- Create opportunities for dialogue – whether through local events or meetings in Westminster, MPs welcome conversations about how they can support their constituents.
