This year marks a major milestone for Blackfen Community Library: 10 years at the heart of the community.

We were proud to celebrate this anniversary at the start of Libraries Week and Volunteers’ Week, bringing together volunteers, partners, library users and supporters for a truly uplifting event. It was a chance not only to reflect on the journey so far, but also to recognise the people whose time, energy and passion have made it all possible.

A decade of community in action

The celebration was led by thoughtful reflections from Paula Weston, who guided us through the story of Blackfen Community Library. Hearing first-hand experiences from volunteers and users was a powerful reminder of what a community-led service can achieve.

From its early days to the vibrant, welcoming space it is today, the library has become far more than a place to borrow books. It is a hub for connection, support and opportunity. A place where people feel welcome, where friendships are formed, and where help is always at hand.

The impact behind the stories

The event concluded with a lively quiz that brought the scale of the library’s impact into sharp focus. In just 10 years, Blackfen Community Library and Rooted Coffee House have:

  • Issued over 250,000 books
  • Given away 2.4 tonnes of food through their community fridge
  • Supported 1,000 people aged 60 and over through their supper club
  • Delivered more than 30,000 hours of volunteer time

These are not just statistics. They represent thousands of individual moments. A conversation that brightened someone’s day. A warm meal shared. A book that inspired a child. A helping hand when it was needed most.

Celebrating our volunteers

At the heart of everything are the volunteers. Volunteers’ Week provided the perfect backdrop to recognise their contribution.

More than 30,000 hours of volunteering is an incredible achievement, but the real impact is seen in the care, dedication and community spirit that volunteers bring every single day. Blackfen Community Library simply would not exist without them.

Looking ahead

As we celebrate this 10-year milestone, it is also a moment to look forward. Community managed libraries like Blackfen show what is possible when people come together with a shared purpose.

We are celebrating many community library milestones, birthdays and anniversaries this year and look forward to sharing more stories and successes with you.

The last decade has laid strong foundations. The next promises even more opportunities to grow, support new initiatives, and continue responding to the needs of the local community.
