Celebrating Community Power: MP Visits Highlight the Vital Role of Volunteer-Led Libraries

In October 2025, two Members of Parliament—Stephen Kinnock and Janet Daby—visited community libraries in their constituencies, shining a spotlight on the transformative impact of grassroots library initiatives.

Stephen Kinnock MP at Taibach Community Library

On Thursday 9th October, Stephen Kinnock MP visited Taibach Community Library in Aberafan Maesteg to celebrate its 10th anniversary and meet the volunteers who have kept the library thriving for over a decade. As part of the Community Libraries Network, Taibach Library exemplifies how local people can preserve and reimagine libraries as vibrant spaces for learning, creativity, and connection.

During the visit, Mr Kinnock spoke with volunteers and library users about the wide range of activities offered—from social groups to wellbeing initiatives—that help tackle isolation and foster community resilience.

“Local libraries like Taibach are so much more than places to borrow books – they are vital community hubs that bring people together, support wellbeing, and offer a lifeline to many. It was a pleasure to meet the volunteers again and see how their continued commitment keeps Taibach Library thriving.”

Luke Coles, Chair of Trustees, added:

“We are proud of what our volunteers and supporters have achieved over the past 11 years. The visit was a chance to show how community libraries are stepping up to meet local needs and making a real difference to people’s lives.”

Janet Daby MP at Corbett Community Library

Just two weeks later, on Saturday 23rd October, Janet Daby MP visited Corbett Community Library in Lewisham East. Welcoming over 5,500 visitors each month, Corbett Library is a beacon of literacy, digital inclusion, and community life.

Ms Daby praised the volunteers and residents who keep the library running, highlighting its role in providing essential services such as digital support, children’s activities, and affordable space hire for grassroots organisations.

“Corbett Community Library is a shining example of what can be achieved when local people come together to support and improve their community,” said Ms Daby. “I was delighted to visit and to support their efforts to keep this wonderful service thriving for years to come.”

Looking ahead, Corbett Library plans to expand its outreach programmes and partnerships, and has secured funding to grow its guest PC and study area—further strengthening its role as a hub for learning and opportunity.

Chris Neath, Network Manager for the Community Libraries Network, described Corbett as a flagship of the movement:

“Community libraries are no longer quiet corners of the past. They are vibrant hubs of connection, learning, and action, rooted in local leadership and designed to meet the needs of future generations.”
