Bedale Community Library has reopened after a significant £30,000 refurbishment project designed to create a brighter, more flexible and welcoming space for local residents. The improvements include redecoration, new furnishings and enhancements aimed at supporting a wider range of community activities and events.

The project was made possible through a combination of funding, including a £20,000 grant from the National Lottery Community Fund, alongside support from local partners, volunteers and tradespeople. To enable the work to take place, the library temporarily closed while volunteers helped move and reorganise around 5,000 books.

The reopening is being celebrated with a community event and the launch of the Summer Reading Challenge. The refurbishment reflects the library’s ambition to provide an inspiring, accessible and community-focused environment that can support both traditional library services and a wider programme of activities.

For community managed libraries, Bedale’s story is a strong example of how external funding, volunteer commitment and a clear vision can be combined to enhance library spaces and strengthen their role at the heart of the community.
